canon

The English word "canon" is derived from the Greek kanon, which meant "reed." A reed was frequently used as a measuring rod, and was thus a standard by which something was judged.  In contemporary terms, "canon" means a criterion, or standard, and also refers to a list or collection of books recognized as having met the standard.
